Government of Mauritius · Government & Environment · 2024MoNatir: Bringing Environmental Data to Every Citizen in Mauritius
A public environmental information app that gives citizens live Air Quality Index readings, monitoring stations on a map, waste management sites, beach facilities and environmental news.
The challenge
- Environmental information was spread across different sources and hard for citizens to find on a phone.
- The app had to present very different data (AQI readings, station details, penalties, waste sites and news) in a way anyone could understand.
- Large lists and map data needed to stay fast on a wide range of devices.
Our solution
- A Flutter app with a clear home dashboard for Air Quality, general information and waste management.
- An interactive map of monitoring stations with colour-coded AQI levels and station detail screens.
- Structured sections for fines and penalties, waste management sites, beach amenities and news, plus links to weather services and a public feedback channel.
- Optimised list rendering and API calls so content loads quickly even on modest phones.
The outcome
- On the App Store for the public in Mauritius since September 2024, and still actively maintained, with the latest update in September 2026.
- One place for citizens to check daily air quality and environmental information.
- A direct feedback channel between citizens and the ministry.
